Spotify’s Expansion into Audiobooks
Spotify, the Sweden-based audio platform, is turning its attention to the audiobook market, following major expansions to its podcast branch. The company is focused on bolstering online book discovery and physical ownership, with the introduction of a new technology called Page Match.
Page Match allows readers to seamlessly switch between reading a physical copy of a book and listening to the audiobook version by simply scanning the page. This feature will be fully rolled out by the end of the month and will be available for Premium subscribers and Audiobook+ members, while free users can access it when they have purchased an audiobook through Spotify.
Partnerships and Expansion
In partnership with Bookshop.org, Spotify users in the U.S. and the U.K. will be able to purchase physical books through the platform starting in spring. Bookshop.org will route sales to independent bookstores, handling pricing, inventory, and order fulfillment.
Spotify has become a significant player in the audiobook industry, with over 500,000 English-language titles available and more than half of eligible Premium users in English-language markets having tried an audiobook on the platform. The company has seen a 36% increase in new listeners and a 37% increase in listening hours.
Spotify’s Growth and Monetization Strategies
Spotify has been working to grow the streaming platform beyond music, with a focus on expanding its podcasting division. The company has opened a new recording studio in Hollywood, premiered several shows in partnership with Netflix, and expanded its creator monetization program.
The service has also recently raised prices for premium listeners in the U.S., following a Golden Globe win for its podcast and the premiere of a video podcast on Netflix. These moves are part of Spotify’s efforts to continue its growth and monetization strategies.
